GIS Use for Hurricane Sandy Response

Justin D. Cole, MS, GISP Senior GIS Analyst – Monroe County Department of Environmental Services

GIS plays a very important piece of situational awareness at the emergency operations center. This was very clear with the response needed for Hurricane Sandy. While, our community was not as impacted as those along the shore, we still had our localized impacts. This presentation looks at the different GIS tools and data sets used in planning and the operations of managing the storm. It also looks at how some of the data sets were created on the fly to answer important questions.

Beyond the local response, this presentation looks at the Crowdsourced information used in the larger management of the storm. Examples of this are Ushahidi and the civil air patrol map mill. Tools like this are still being used and the world community is still aiding in the rebuilding of the communities hit by the storm.
